Xbox Blue Ray (Blu-ray) : In case any Xbox 360 owners were still holding out hope of that official external Blu-ray player to replace their HD-DVD drive, it now looks like it'll never be happening. Microsoft's Director of Xbox and Entertainment, Stephen McGill, has told the Xbox 360 Acheivement site after having the question posed to him, that 'Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format.'
But Seattle-based tech Web site Tech Flash (via Gamasutra) cornered Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division, at CES this week and pressed him on the issue. And this time, Bach talked at length about the subject.
Microsoft still has no plans to bring Sony's high-definition disk format to its console, mainly because consumers aren't asking for it, Bach said.
why, Microsoft, why no Blu-ray player?
Well, aside from the aforementioned costs issues, I'd say Microsoft simply believes, like a lot of other people, that movies should not come on optical discs anymore. And instead of licensing technology from Sony, its archrival--at least when it comes to gaming--it would prefer to have you rent or buy digital versions of movies via Xbox Live.
That's all well and good, but for those of us who rent our Blu-rays from Netflix, the only choice is the PS3--or the Xbox 360 and a standalone Blu-ray player.
